The roles

Corporate Director of Community Engagement and Wellbeing
Salary: Up to £142,856

Islington is a wonderfully diverse borough. There are more than 215,000 people who live here and every one of them has an equal right to thrive. However, we know too many of our people are in danger of being left behind.

We are committed to tackling this - creating strong, inclusive, and connected communities where, regardless of background, residents have fair and equal access to services. Our mission is to ensure that Islington is a borough where we strive in partnership with our residents, to reduce all forms of inequality. We’ll be relentless in our drive to create a more equal Islington, where everyone has the power to live their lives on their own terms. To do this, we will need to be bolder and more innovative than ever before.

Reporting to the Chief Executive and leading a broad and varied portfolio of services, you will ensure that we are working together with our diverse communities to create a more equal future for our borough. Working closely with a range of partners, including our voluntary and community sector, you will ensure that our communities are in the driving seat as we transform services to make the biggest difference to their lives.

You will ensure that we relentlessly tackle inequality by enshrining this value in everything that we do, being bolder and more innovative by testing new service models that help to break down barriers and create new opportunities beyond what has always been done.

We’re looking for a leader who can enable and unlock the potential of our teams, with a proven track record of delivering whole-scale change at a senior level in large, complex organisations. You’ll be able to demonstrate a deep understanding of inequalities and evidence the impacts that you have made. With a high level of resilience, it will be important for you to have extensive experience of working with politicians with a good understanding of the political perspective and the ability to secure the confidence of members and senior leaders. Equally important to us is your style of leadership, you’ll be a role model for best practice and innovation, able to inspire and encourage our committed, dedicated workforce and partners to deliver on our key priorities across our communities.

If you have the energy, enthusiasm, credibility, and skills to make a real difference and deliver the best possible outcomes for the people of Islington, then we would like to hear from you. Director of Public Health
Salary: Up to £125,000

Islington is a dynamic, inner London borough of great strengths: thriving businesses; excellent transport links; outstanding services; and most importantly, a rich and wonderful diversity of people, cultures and communities all underpinned by a brave and ambitious agenda to reduce inequality. There are more than 215,000 people who live here and every one of them has an equal right to thrive.

Despite these strengths, too many of our people are in danger of being left behind, deprived of opportunities and choices and the autonomy to shape their lives in the way they want. We are committed to tackling this - creating strong, inclusive, and connected communities where, regardless of background, residents have fair and equal access to services. Our mission is to ensure that Islington is a borough where we strive in partnership with our residents, to reduce all forms of inequality.

Following the recent decision to de-merge the Public Health service from our neighbours in Camden, we now have a unique opportunity for an experienced and dynamic Director of Public Health to lead the strategic development, implementation, and delivery of the public health agenda in the borough. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive, you will provide expert advice and guidance to senior managers and elected members, work with partners across the public, private, and voluntary sectors, and drive forward a broad range of health improvement programmes.

You’ll develop and implement a comprehensive public health strategy along with innovative, evidence-based initiatives to address key public health challenges, such as health inequalities, obesity, and mental health. You’ll have the freedom and autonomy to lead our highly respected and influential Public Health team, working collaboratively with partners across the council, the NHS, and communities to deliver key outcomes and improve health and wellbeing across Islington.

As Director of Public Health, you’ll be the driving force behind better health and wellbeing in our borough and you’ll target health inequalities with a relentless improvement drive. It’s essential that you are a registered GMC, GDC or UK PHR public health specialist with significant experience in all areas of public health practice and knowledge of national and local public health policy and best practice.

This is a rare opportunity, the kind that makes reputations and careers, enabling you to work at the heart of local government, making a real difference to the health and wellbeing of our residents for a more equal Islington. For further information about this exciting opportunity please call our advising consultants at Penna: Nick Raper on 07715 690463 or Kelly Ridley on 07709 512415.
